Yang Wei
Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences,
President of Zhejiang University, China



Born in Beijing in February 1954, native of Liuyang, Hunan Province. Professor Yang Wei, begun to work in January 1969. In May 1976 he joined the CPC. He graduated from Northwestern Polytechnical University in 1976, received a master's degree at Tsinghua University in 1981, and obtained a Ph.D. in 1985 from Brown University in the United States, an expert at solid mechanics.

•  From Jan. 1969 to Aug. 1973: sent down to the countryside, at Nie Jiaping Brigade of Feng Jia Ping Community, at Yanchua n County, Shaanxi Province
•  From Sep. 1973 to Dec. 1976: Graduated from Northwestern Polytechnical University, Department of learning materials and thermal processing
•  From Dec. 1976 to May 1978: Craft moulders at Jing Bo Machinery Factory, Shaorao District in Jiangxi Province
•  From May 1978 to Aug. 2004: Taught at Department of mechanical engineering and Department of engineering mechanics at Tsinghua University
•  Dec. 1989: promoted to Professorship
•  From Jan. 1997 to Apr. 2004: Head of the Department of engineering mechanics at Tsinghua University
•  From 1999 to 2004: Changjiang Scholar specially invited by China's Ministry of Education
•  2003: elected to be academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and academician of Third World Academy of Sciences
•  From Apr. 2004 to Aug. Executive vice-dean, executive vice-dean of the School of Aerospace, Tsinghua University
•  From 2004 to 2006: Director of Academic Committee of Tsinghua University
•  From Sep. 2004 to Jul. 2006: Director, Office of Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council; Department Chief of Graduate Studies and Degrees Management, China's Ministry of Education
•  From Aug. 2006: President, Zhejiang University

Yang is a world pioneer in the research fields of fracture mechanics, meso-/micro- mechanics, mechatronic reliability and has published a series books based on his research. Two of his books, Mesoplasticity and its applications and Mechatronic reliability: electric failures, mechanical-electrical coupling, domain switching, mass-flow instabilities were published by Springer.
